But then, the best kinds of walks are the ones where you come back with pink cheeks and mud all over your gummies.

I often catch the train into Taunton, and on the drive back to Wearne House we often pass Burrow Mump. It’s a hill with some ruins on top. It currently serves as a memorial by the National Trust to the Somerset men who lost their lives in WWI + WWII. Though, apparently the ruins go back a fair way – the medieval church was dedicated to St Michael as part of Athelney Abbey from the mid 15th Century.

It kind of blows my mind how much history this country has.

Regardless, I’ve been meaning to go up there for ages and so we did! All six of us, plus the dogs. It was nice walk, actually. Fairly grey, but the view was quite pretty across the moor.

Bryan from next door has a whole bunch of young calves in the yard. You can see them from the Tower Room Bathroom, all chomping away with their little heads stuck through the fence. We were coming back from a walk when I deemed it a great idea to go and say hi. Oh! They were curious little things, but not especially brave. Bar one rather nonchalant fellow who kept eating when I was down the other end, the others stared at me, drank me in. Pushing forward curiously, while some backed away.

One licked my hand! What a brave little guy! He did it twice! Oh, excitement.

I love being this close to them, but I worry that I scared them. I tried to be very calm, and I wish I knew them better (and they knew me). In the end I settled for being super close, with their massive eyes and super long eyelashes. With their big noses and faces. Oh! Baby cows!

So much love for them. I suspect they were headed for the feedlot or something similar which makes me sad. Still, that afternoon they bought much delight.

I was also lucky that Samuel was there to hang out with the dogs while I dawdled with the calves. Henry and Duffy were SO KEEN to get in the yard too. I can see why, who wouldn’t want to hang out with the calves?

Me and Sam took Henry + Duffy for a walk across the moors. Pam drew us a little map and off went! It was a bit like a section from Hairy Maclary (from Donaldson’s Dairy).

Through the gate…

… Past the pond…

… Across the very busy road …

.. and once past the squiggle and some ducks, as far as we pleased.

We did some running!

But mostly a lot of walking. It was nice being out in the sun. The air was pretty crisp, but it was lovely down by the River Parrett.
